e-toilet project for schools inaugurated

The ‘e-toilet project', which aims at creating an environment-friendly and student-friendly atmosphere in schools, was launched at the Government Girls High School here.
V. R. Krishna Iyer, former judge of the Supreme Court, inaugurated the project implemented using the local area development fund of P. Rajeev MP, and with the contribution of the Kochi Refinery.
Praising the initiative, Mr. Iyer said that the project will be of immense help to several students. He said that it could also evolve as a model scheme for the entire nation.
Mr. Rajeev said that the project will be implemented in 25 schools in the district. Each toilet unit will cost around Rs.1.5 lakh and five such units have been set up at the Government Girls High School. The units in the remaining schools will be set up within a month, he said.
Automatic flush and access control, automatic cleaning of the floors after 10 persons use the toilet and facilities for controlling the water usage are a few features of the toilet. Mr. Rajeev said that women-friendly toilets will also be set up as part of the project. Sanitary napkin vending machines will be set up in schools with the support of the National Rural Health Mission, he said.
